Research and Problem Analysis

Staying with roommates with incompatible schedules can have a negative affect on our health and work productivity. Students in hostels are constantly shifting their rooms unable to find their right fit.

It is highly necessary for people’s personality to be compatible to stay together for a long time. Any person can be categorised among these 4 personality temperaments based on their level of extroversion and orientation towards relationships/tasks. The table shows which temperaments are compatible with each other and which aren’t.

Current User Journey
-
Too many physical documents to submit to warden.
-
Sub-warden is the common point of contact for any approval.
-
Different wardens to contact for room change within same/different hostel building.
-
Lack of understanding & recurring differences between roommates is the main cause for room change.
-
Students are not able to get to know their roommates beforehand and figure out their compatibility.

Cognitive Task Analysis
The first version of the object-action matrix shows a much broader mapping which has a lot of holes due to inconsistencies and redundancies in the grammar used while the second version is a much denser matrix with categorised and prioritised mapping.
The solution focuses on compatibility of daily schedules, habits and priority concerns through a compatibility test. It enables to accept, reject and request for roommates. Scheduling a warden meet, keeping track of progress and room allocation are among the others.

User Flow and Prototyping

Branding and UI
Blue signifies trust - basis of any relationship
Pink signifies friendship - most important aspect for 2 or more individuals to stay together.
Gradient - a connection between trust and friendship which serves as the foundation for roommate compatibility.

Home Screen Adaptability:

The 1st UI shows the home screen before taking the personality test.
This is visible when a new user enters the app.

The 2nd UI shows the adapted home screen after the user takes the personality test.
A personality & schedule section summarises their test.

Personality test:

The questions are framed to understand in which of the 4 categories the user falls into - Melancholic, Choleric, Phlegmatic or Sanguine.

They also test user's attitude towards privacy & personal space, cleanliness and noise sensitivity.

User Testing
Method Used: In person moderated testing | Think aloud testing
Users background: 5 Students staying at Karnavati University hostel, exploring the Roomii app for the first time.
Tasks given to users:
-
You are looking to shift into a new room. Navigate through the app and try to find your best match.
-
You are 2 roommates in your room and are looking for a 3rd roommate. Navigate through the app and try to find your best match.
User Feedback:
-
Users found the app very simple and straightforward to use.
-
Most users directly clicked on the 'personality test' button on the home screen before they searched for a room/roomie, which was exactly how I intended users to navigate.
-
Some users were confused about the 'roomie requests' page as its UI was similar to the other pages.
-
Users had questions as to how a final match would be made once a roomie request is sent.
